Device for Adding Changeable Special Character

A device for adding a special character, such as a mathematical symbol, to a typewriter comprises changeable type element 10. Element 10 has type carrying portion 11, intermediate flexible portion 12 and indicator portion 13 bearing the designation of the special character observable by a typist.

Element 10 is slidably received and removably mounted in the upper edge of typewriter card guide 14. Guide 14 is stationarily mounted in front of printing platen 15. To effect printing of the special character, a printing element, such as the single element print head of the IBM SELECTRIC typewriter, strikes carrying portion 11 of element 10 and forces it forward toward printing platen 15.

Movement of carrying portion 11 is permitted due to the flexing of intermediate portion 12.
