This family of luminescent phosphors is composed generally of yttrium tungstate in combination with a rare earth activator.

The phosphor is prepared by reacting yttrium oxide with a dilute rare earth chloride, drying the product, ball milling this with tungstic acid, then adding lithium bromide and firing the resultant mix in air to produce a powder.

Suitable rare earth chlorides are the chlorides of Dy-Eu-Er-Pr-Ho-Ce-Ge and Yb, each exhibiting a characteristic emission wavelength. The dilution of rare earth chloride should be about 10% aqueous solution. The amount of lithium bromide should be in the order of 10% by weight.
