Abstract

Electronic element 1 has a semimetal crystalline body constituted of an element selected from the group consisting of bismuth, antimony and arsenic. Element 1 has two portions 3a and 3b, including an impurity material, facilitating ohmic contact application, contiguous with and defining a separating portion 2 of pure semimetal serving as the active region of this element.

Semimetal Electronic Element

Electronic element 1 has a semimetal crystalline body constituted of an element selected from the group consisting of bismuth, antimony and arsenic. Element 1 has two portions 3a and 3b, including an impurity material, facilitating ohmic contact application, contiguous with and defining a separating portion 2 of pure semimetal serving as the active region of this element.

Box 5 represents a low temperature environment which is used for the operation of element 1. A pair of electromagnets 6a and 6b, conductors 4a and 4b apply perpendicular electric and magnetic fields E and B to this body. Magnetic field B is applied parallel to the trigonal axis z of the crystalline body. The electric field E is applied perpendicular to field B along the bisectrix axis y of the crystalline body. These fields are of such value that the crystalline body exhibits a sharp change in its magnetoresistance from a relatively high to a relatively low value with increasing electric field. Non-linear conductivity of the semimetal crystalline body is obtained. This nonlinear conductivity is used in switches, transducers, detectors, harmonic generators, etc.
