Abstract

Documents 10 are urged by movable carriage 1 1 into contact with picker belt 12. Carriage 11, upon being moved to a position to permit insertion of documents 10, causes the winding of spring 13. This occurs as shaft 14 is rotated through pulleys 15 and cable 16 which are connected between pulleys 15 and carriage 11.

Picker belt 12 is trained about pulleys 18, 10 and 20. Pulley 18 is driven by means of continuous belt 21. Belt 21 is driven from the same source which drives separator belt 22. The source for driving belts 21 and 22 is not shown: However, it drives belts 21 and 22 through a clutch which is controlled by magnet
23.

Pulley 20 is rotatably mounted upon arm 25 which is pivotally mounted on shaft 26 which carries pulley 18. Arm 25 is urged in a counterclockwise direction by spring 27. The movement of arm 25 is also controlled by solenoid 28. Pin 30 projects from arm 25 so as to extend through slot 31 formed in an extension of pawl 32. This is adapted to engage ratchet wheel 33 fixed to shaft 14. Pawl 32 is pivotally mounted and is urged by flat spring 34 to engage ratchet wheel 33. When pawl 32 is engaged with ratchet wheel 33, carriage 11 is not moved by spring 13.

A start switch, not shown, is depressed to energize magnet 23, establishing a driving connection between the drive source and the pulleys for operating belts 21 and 22. Once magnet 23 is energized, it remains energized provided hopper card lever 35 closes its associated contacts. This occur s as long as documents 10 are in the hopper.

Movement of belt 21 causes picker belt 12 to feed documents. The documents are fed between separator belt 22 and restraining belt 40, which is also driven from the main drive. Separator belt 22 bears upon documents 10 with a greater force than restraining belt 4...
