Alkaline earth metal phosphors are sensitized by the addition of lanthanide and uranium activators to increase their fluorescence.

An alkaline earth compound which is an oxide at fusion temperature is uniformly mixed with a lanthanide and uranium salt in a proportion of at least 0. 01%. The mixture is then heated to fusion.

Acid or oxides of tungsten or molybdenum are now added to the mixture and the material is again heated. The temperature is slightly greater than that of the first heating.

Since oxides or acids of tungsten and molybdenum are used to supply the anion portion of the phosphor molecule, the molar ratio of cation to anion must be almost 1: 1. The presence of a slight excess of cation forming alkaline earth compounds is desired.
