In this character sensing system, a character is scanned by radiant energy such as white light. The reflected light is converted into digital form to provide an indication of the character.

The document is moved under an optical system which projects a character image onto a solar cell transducer. The solar cells are vertically aligned and scan successive vertical segments of a character.

Solar cell outputs are fed to amplifiers Amp and then to a digitalization system. This includes, for each cell, a Driver, Maximum and Minimum Level Detectors with Restorers and Buffer Drivers, a Divider and a Threshold Gate. These include transistors T1 to T7, resistors, capacitors and a diode.

The most positive amplifier output represents a minimum light condition on the exposed cell. The system indicates black for each cell, if the ratio of black area to white area is unity or more.

To initiate the scanning of a document, all of the cells first look at a reference black surface. This causes T1 and T2 to be highly conductive. Condenser C1 charges to a maximum positive potential representative of the reference black level. Time constant R1C1 is long with respect to the time the document is under the transducer. After the solar cells have seen the reference black, the document passes under the transducer and all of the cells see the background color of this particular document.
