Air Sensing Device

The device senses holes punched in plastic tape or card stock by virtue of the rate of air flow through bores arranged to correspond with the punching positions in the tape or card.

Punched tape 1 passes over block 2. This has a row of bores 3 equal in number to the punch positions on the tape. Tape 1 is pressed against the top surface of block 2 by a pad 4 held by leaf spring 5. Each bore 3 connects with a corresponding cylinder 6 in which is fitted a piston 7. Initially, the piston is held in the upper position by a bar 8. When the piston is released by moving the bar 8 down and to the right, the piston moves down under the action of a tension spring 9.

If there is a hole in the tape at the bore inlet, air flows through the bore into the cylinder and the piston moves rapidly. On the other hand, in the absence of a hole in the tape at the bore inlet, the piston moves only slowly as air leaks through the bore into the cylinder. The variation in the piston speed is used to sense the presence of a hole by either a contact timing method or a velocity sensing method.

One contact timing method consists in arranging contact points so that they close when the piston has nearly completed its movement. The contacts close after one of two substantially different periods of time after the piston is released depending on whether or not a hole is aligned with the bore inlet.
