The active region in a magnetic film element is definable within close limits by a complex of gaps in the film at an angle to the easy axis.

In this cylindrical magnetic film binary element, a transverse magnetic field produced by a current in the word conductor rotates the magnetic vector of the circumferentially oriented nickel-iron magnetic film to a longitudinal direction. An additional magnetic field produced by either a positive or a negative current along the bit sense conductor provides for rotation to one or the other of two conditions of stability along the easy axis of the film, storing selectively a 0 or a 1 value. Destructive readout is accomplished by a current in the word conductor, which rotates the magnetic vector of the film and thus induces in the bit-sense conductor a signal with polarity according to bit value.

The word conductor normally does not encompass the entire length of magnetic film, which is most effectively of rather larger dimensions than the width of the word conductor to help provide a more favorable magnetic return flux path. Because the magnetic film extends to some distance from the word conductor, the active region can be considerably smaller than the entire film. Consecutive drive in the same direction, e.g., consecutive 0 bits, causes expansion of the active region.

The signal contribution from this expanded active region adds to the output of a consecutive bit of the same polarity, 0 bit....
