Micro Optical Printer

When a voice coil for actuating a character mask is used in a printer, as the number of available characters is increased, the excursion of the voice coil must be increased. There is required either a consequent added power demand or increase in the size of the voice coil driver or both.

The required excursion of the voice coil is cut in half by provision of two columns of characters on the character mask. Either of the columns is selectively positioned on the optical axis of the optical - system by actuation of either of the column position electromagnets. The voice coil is constructed with enough play between it and the core such that sidewise movement with respect to the selected column is effected.
