Abstract

The electromagnetic actuator has an armature 15 pivoted adjacent to the free end of the intermediate leg 12 of an E-shaped core 10. Around each of the outer legs 11 and 13 of the core 10 is wound a coil. The coils 17 and 18 are alternatively energizable to pivot armature 15. There is a small gap a between the free end of the leg 12 and the armature 15.

Electromagnetic Actuator

The electromagnetic actuator has an armature 15 pivoted adjacent to the free end of the intermediate leg 12 of an E-shaped core 10. Around each of the outer legs 11 and 13 of the core 10 is wound a coil. The coils 17 and 18 are alternatively energizable to pivot armature 15. There is a small gap a between the free end of the leg 12 and the armature 15.

There is a wider gap b between the free end of the outer leg 13 and the armature in the limit position set by an adjustable screw 20. When a coil is energized, the flux path through the outer leg, the intermediate leg and the armature is of lower reluctance than the flux path through the outer legs and the armature.

This insures that the flux in the outer leg 13 is substantially less than that in the leg 12. It is such as to counteract remanent flux in the leg 13 so as not to attract the armature 15 towards the leg 13.
