Type Segment Rolling Machine

Type characters are rolled with a precise spacing onto the periphery of relatively hard steel print-wheels.

Blank print-wheels 1 are clamped by hydraulic pressure to shaft 2 for oscillating movement against plane matrix 3 which has corresponding longitudinal movement. Matrix 3 is clamped in a reciprocating table 4 which is slidable on rollers 5.

Table 4 is moved toward and away from the work by manual rotation of lever 6 attached to eccentric shaft 7. To secure oscillatory rolling of blank 1 on matrix 3, gear sector 8 is attached to shaft 2 and meshes with gear sector 9. Sector 9 is attached to and pivots about shaft 10, as is the sector 11 which engages rack 12 on table 4. Sector 9 is actuated by link 13 which is pivoted to crank 14.

Motor 15 rotates crank 14, thus oscillating sector 9 to cause coordinated movement of gear sectors 8 and 11. Sector 8 rotates blank 1 through shaft 2, while sector 8 reciprocates table 4 and matrix 3 through rack 12. During rolling of the type, matrix 3 is fed into the blank several times by raising table 4 through eccentric shaft 7.
