Card Positioning and Guiding Mechanism

This mechanism is for feeding successive punched cards in parallel from a stack and then serially to a processing station.

Punched cards 1 are picked off the bottom of stack 2 and are fed through slot 3 to constantly driven lateral feed roller 4. Here, presser roller 5 is cam-actuated to grip the card and feed its leading edge 6 against channel member 7 supported on parallel support springs 8. Card 1 pushes member 7 laterally against the bias of springs 8 to its position represented by dot-and-dash lines. Here, roller 5 is cam-released to free card 1 from roller 4. Springs 8 prevent tilting of member 7 under the thrust of card 1.

Upon the release from roller 5, member 7 urges card 1 back toward the right and into contact with the straight edge of an aligning and positioning bar 9 which aligns the card 1 with it. At this point an anchor tongue 10 fixed to member 7 is gripped between cam-actuated clamp elements 11 and 12 to anchor member 7 in this position. A longitudinal feed roller 13 drives card 1 lengthwise in accurately guided condition between bar 9 and member 7.
