Punch Card Feeding Mechanism

The arrangement uses a carriage periodically reciprocated in the card feeding direction. It has a gripper device for holding the cards in position when moving in the feeding direction and releasing them when moving in the opposite direction. It is adapted for large feeding steps.

Cards 1 pass through a path defined by base plate 2 and cover plate 3. Mounted on each side of the path is U-shaped bar 4 which is displaceable in the card feeding direction. The upper free flanks of bar 4 extend across cards 1. On their lower free flanks, bars 4 support engageable and disengageable clamps by which the cards can be pressed against the upper flanks. The clamps have elastic strips 5 clamped in position at one end of them. For actuating the clamps, a slide 6, displaceable in the feeding direction, is mounted behind the base of bar
4. Attached to slide 6 are pins 7 which through elongated holes 8, provided in the U-shaped bar 4, engage elastic strips 5.

In the non-operated condition, pins 7 are positioned at the right ends of elongated holes 8 in bar 4. With slide 6 moving in the feeding direction under the action of cam 9 and spring 10, elastic strips 5 are raised, thus pressing the punched cards against bar 4. After pins 7 reach the left edge of elongated holes 8, they, in continued movement in the feeding direction, move along the bars 4 together with the clamped cards.
