Laser or Maser

A laser or maser assembly uses an active element 10 having an active portion 11. In this, stimulated emission is produced by pumping radiation 12. The inactive portion 13 is shielded from the pumping radiation.

Portion 13 acts as a heat sink to permit rapid flow of heat out of portion 11. Portion 13 is immersed in a cooling fluid, e. g., liquid helium or nitrogen. Portion 13 also increases the optical path length between reflections.
