The optical device is for multiplying a matrix by a vector or for multiplying two matrices.

A matrix F is written on an optical sheet 10 where the transmission of the spot is proportional to the matrix element value Fi.. Such sheet 10 is a photographic film or a metallic plated film with variable thicknesses. Sheet 10 is placed in the image plane of lens 12. Light is applied to lens 12 through a bank of shutters 14. The opening and closing of shutters 14 is controlled by control 16.

By controlling the operation of shutters 14, these shutters can be made to represent a vector. Light passing through shutters 14 and sheet 10 is collected by lens 18 and applied to photo-multiplier detectors 20 positioned in the image plane of lens 18. The signals applied to these detectors represent the product of the vector represented by shutters 14 and the matrix represented by sheet 10.

Since a matrix is made up of a plurality of vectors, matrix multiplication is performed column by column.
