Combination Tape Reel and Reel Container

Reel 17 of magnetic tape is supported around the smooth surface of aluminum cylinder 16 between flexible flanges 18 and 19. These are concentrically fixed about cylindrical hub 11 having concentric hole 22 through which is received a drive spindle, not shown, of a tape transport.

Rigid circular backing plate 14 is fixed concentrically to hub member 11. Plate 14 has formed in it file-protect annular opening 21 into which a rubber ring, not shown, can be placed to prevent writing on the tape. Three teeth 15 extend radially outward on the exposed side of hub 11 when the tape reel is on a drive.

Removable cover 13, made of rigid material, can be placed over the reel of tape. Cover 13 has a corresponding set of teeth 12, which can be screwed beneath teeth 15 on hub 11 to fasten the cover over the reel and against plate 14 to protect the tape from dust.

Furthermore, when the reel is manually handled with cover 13 engaged, no manual pressure is applied to flanges 18 and 19. Hence cover 13 is only removed after the reel has been placed on the tape drive.
