In this data converting system a braking device is associated with a servo motor shaft.

Comparator 10 receives and compares digital signals on conductors 11 and 12 representing the desired or commanded and actual conditions of controlled member 16. It provides difference signals on conductors 39 and 40 to a delay circuit 13 which energizes an amplifier 14. Amplifier 14 drives DC motor 15 whose armature positions controlled member 16 via gearing 17.

Mechanical brake 18 is in braking relation with output shaft of motor 15. It stops the armature of motor 15 and member 16. Member 16 is coupled to analog-to-digital converter 19. Thus, digital feedback signals corresponding to the actual position of member 16 are supplied to comparator 10 over feedback conductor 12.

Difference signals from 10 indicate that motor 15 should be driven in a forward or reverse direction or should not be energized when the input and feedback signals are the same. A digital feedback signal is supplied serially by converter 19 to comparator 10.

When input and feedback signals are the same, the energizing power is immediately removed from motor 15. Brake 18 is actuated to quickly bring the armature of motor 15 and member 16 to a stop.
