Abstract

The optical system has a number of elements positioned along optical axis X. The elements include light source A, mask B which has a horizontal slit BS, condenser lens C, quartz plate D which has a piezoelectric driver K attached, condenser lens E, mask F having a slot FS, projection lens G, cylindrical lens H and screen J. Lenses C and E produce an image of slit BS in the plane of mask F. Lenses G produces an image of plate D on screen J. Lens H produces an astigmatic image on screen J of the image which appears in the plane of mask F. Light source A is flashed at the same time that a signal is applied to driver K.

Lenses C and E produce an image of slit BS in the plane of mask
F. Lenses G produces an image of plate D on screen J. Lens H produces an astigmatic image on screen J of the image which appears in the plane of mask F. Light source A is flashed at the same time that a signal is applied to driver K.

Any change in the refractive index along the Y axis of plate D causes the image of slit BS to be deviated in the plane of mask F in the Y direction. Due to the inclination of slit FS, this appears as a change in the X direction on screen J. Thus, the image which appears on screen J represents the change in refractive index along plate D. An example of the type of image which would appear on screen J is shown in the lower left-hand drawing.

By placing an additional mask in the plane of plate D and by orienting slit BS in a vertical direction, the image on screen J indicates the refractive index along plate D. An example of such an image is shown in the lower right-hand drawing. The device provides a visible presentation of transient phenomena without the use of a cathode ray tube.
