Pump Source for Continuous Wave Laser

The laser pump source effects efficient optical coupling of the pump source and the laser rod. Continuous operation of a solid-state laser is possible using this pump source.

The laser pump source has a composite structure of three concentric cylindrical cavities. The inner cavity contains laser rod 1, transparent cladding material 2 surrounding the laser rod, and a transparent coolant. The coolant enters the inner cavity at inlet 3, circulates through the cavity cooling laser rod 1 and leaves the cavity at outlet 4. The second concentric cavity, in order of increasing diameter, is a relatively low pressure discharge pump source 5. The gas within source 5 is selected such that the emission band of the source 5 matches the absorption band of laser rod 1. Source 5 produces a diffused light radiating in all directions. Light emitted at the back surface of source 5 is scattered by diffusing surface 6 and caused to travel inwardly through source 5 toward laser rod 1.
