When an intimate mixture of oxalic acid and an amine, such as diphenylamine, is exposed to light, a blue dye is produced without further treatment. Using this material, a copy of a master document is produced. This copy is fixed by heat without producing toxic vaporous products.

A solution of oxalic acid and diphenylamine is coated on a support, such as transparent film or paper. The solution is allowed to dry. An image of a master document being copied is projected on the coating. The portions of the coating exposed to light turn to blue while the remaining portions not exposed to light remain colorless.

The resulting copy is permanently fixed by subjecting the exposed coating to heat in the range of 100 degrees C to 150 degrees C for a short time interval, in the order of several seconds to a minute. The heat causes the oxalic acid to decompose to carbon dioxide and water which are gaseous in the temperature range employed. The final copy has a white image on a blue background.
