In diode emitter follower logic, some signal is lost in each stage due to the forward impedance of the diodes and the base junction of the emitter follower. There is also a level shift due to the VBE of the emitter follower.

In this circuit, emitter follower stage 10 and common emitter amplifier stage 12 are both kept in Class A operation at all times. Feedback from the base of transistor 12 to the emitter of transistor 10 through resistors 14 and 15 controls the gain.

This operation causes the output at terminal 16 to be restored to the desired operating levels without the use of clamping diodes.
