In testing subminiature modules, it is desirable the socket not damage the module pins and provide low resistance, clean contacts.

This socket has block 10 of insulating material such as rubber.

In this are containers 11, of conductive material such as copper, for each contact pin 21 of module 22 to be tested. Also molded adjacent each container 11 are opposing permanent magnets 12. Cover 14 having holes for each pin 21 is secured over containers 11 that are filled with magnetizable pellets 15. Magnets 12 set up magnetic fields which prevent accidental spilling of pellets 15. Mounted adjacent the sides of block 10 are electromagnets 16. Mounted under 10 is additional electromagnet 17. Leads 18 connected to each container 11 extend through insulated passages in core 20 of magnet
17.

AC (alternate one-half cycle to left 16 and right 16 coils) applied to 16 overcomes the fields of magnets 12 and vibrates the pellets 15. These are thus loosened to permit easy insertion and removal of pins 21 of module 22. With 21 fully inserted, the AC is removed. DC is applied to magnet 17 compacting the pellets about pins 15 to form a clean, low resistance contact. The field of magnet 17 is controlled to maintain the level of the resistance of the contacts.
