Passive Electric Network

This arrangement comprises a passive four terminal network for pulse narrowing, which serves to transmit the readback pulses from a magnetic transducer using a readback amplifier.

Based on the signal function of a transducer pulse

(Image Omitted)

D(x) represents the sensitivity function of the transducer. M (x - x(o)) represents the change in surface magnetization of the recording medium.

Considering D(x) to act as a linear filter which degrades M(x - x(o)) during the reproduction process, it is possible to construct a filter network. The relatively simple structure can use passive elements and realizes desirable effects. The transfer characteristic, i.e., pulse width determined by frequency, changes exponentially in accordance with the formula:

(Image Omitted)

K is the ratio of the width of the output pulse to the width of the input pulse. The filter network has a substantially linear phase characteristic.

These conditions result in a specific expression for the transfer characteristic in accordance with frequency. This is substituted in the equations for the branch impedances of the symmetrical lattice network. The equation is given in terms of the transfer function. By this equation, it is then possible to determine the structure of the network and the parameters of the required circuit elements.
