Abstract

This is apparatus for editing data from a document being read into a data processor where it is desirable to be able to ignore columns of data. Where the data to be excluded from the data processor contains characters which fail to pass processor error checks, it is of considerable importance that unwanted data be excluded prior to error checking.

Automatic Editing Device

This is apparatus for editing data from a document being read into a data processor where it is desirable to be able to ignore columns of data. Where the data to be excluded from the data processor contains characters which fail to pass processor error checks, it is of considerable importance that unwanted data be excluded prior to error checking.

Data from a reader or a buffer is presented at 10 serially by character where it is translated at 11 into a machine code. Characters are then transferred to a one-character register 12, And 13, Or 14, And 15 to a selected location in storage 16. This is determined by address selection circuit 17.

In this editing operation, prior to readin of data, special symbols are stored at specified character locations in storage 16 at which specified column data from readin is to be stored. The symbol is placed in a character location corresponding to a column of data from the document which is to be edited out. This symbol is read from storage 16 by circuit 17 in time with the readin of the character for that location at 10 into one character register 20.

If the edit symbol is present in register 20, it is recognized by edit circuitry 21 to allow the character in 20 to be transferred through And 22 to the storage location from which it originated. The input data in register 12 is prevented from being transferred by disabling And 13.

Checking circuit 24, in circuit with input data, is thus avoided for unwan...
