Abstract

This device can finish a cylindrical or radiused surface, such as the magnetic tape contacting surface of a magnetic head, to two microinches peak to valley. When combinations of hard and soft material are lapped, such as in magnetic heads, the softer material is not channeled below the surface of the adjacent harder material.

Random Motion Lap for Cylindrical Surface

This device can finish a cylindrical or radiused surface, such as the magnetic tape contacting surface of a magnetic head, to two microinches peak to valley. When combinations of hard and soft material are lapped, such as in magnetic heads, the softer material is not channeled below the surface of the adjacent harder material.

The item 1 to be lapped is mounted in a fixed position relative to base 2 and uprights 3. Lapping element 4 is attached to the cross-bar of cradle 5. Element 4 is replaceable and urged against item 1 by suitable spring tension which is adjustable. Element 4 is contoured to the shape of the surface to be lapped.

Cradle 5 is mounted on uprights 3 by shafts 6. These, through suitable bearings, allow cradle 5 to have translational and rotational notion along the axis of shafts 6. Through suitable mechanical linkages, such as shown, drive 7 provides oscillatory, translational motion. Drive 8 provides oscillatory rotational motion to element 4. Drives 7 and 8 are independently controlled to allow translational motion only, rotational motion only, or a combination of the two, at various speeds, to give a random motion.
