Vacuum Copy Holder With Self-Actuated Holding Area

This vacuum copy holder holds various sizes of copy with a minimum loss of vacuum. A plurality of holding areas is provided at predetermined positions on the holder for holding down the corners of each size of drawing.

Each holding area, such as A, includes a group of vacuum pools 2...14 and a sensing hole 16. As shown in cross section B-B, the pools are connected via small diameter holes to chamber 20. Chamber 20 is connected via hole 22 to main chamber 26 which, in turn, is connected to a vacuum supply. Sensing hole 16 is also connected via a small diameter hole and large diameter hole 24 to main chamber 26. Additionally, elastic diaphragm 18 is provided between sensing hole 16 and connecting hole 22. In the absence of a drawing over the holding area, atmospheric pressure exists on the upper surface of the diaphragm while vacuum is maintained on the under surface. The pressure differential is sufficient to cause the diaphragm to cover hole 22 and prevent the vacuum from being maintained in the vacuum pools. When a drawing is placed on the holder, sensing hole 16 is covered and vacuum is now applied to both sides of the diaphragm. Consequently, no pressure differential exists and the diaphragm is restored to its relaxed position as shown. Since the hole 22 is now uncovered, chamber 26 is connected to chamber 20 and full vacuum is maintained in the vacuum pools to hold the drawing.
