Tunnel Diode Circuit

The circuit has tunnel diode 1, biasing resistor 2 and inductor 3. By choosing the proper operating point, the circuit operates as either a monostable or a bistable circuit.

For bistable operation, the value of the biasing resistor is chosen so that the circuit operates at the point shown in the middle drawing. The circuit operates on either positive or negative input pulses. Assuming that the circuit is at rest at point 4, the first positive pulse at input terminal 14 switches diode 1 to point 5. The leading edge of the second positive pulse raises the diode voltage to point 6. The trailing edge of the second pulse drives the circuit back toward point 5. the energy stored in inductor 3 drives the circuit back past point 5 and past valley point 7. Thus, the circuit is switched back to the original operating point. The operation is the same for negative input pulses, except that the original state is at point 5.

To operate the circuit in the monostable mode, the value of resistor 2 is chosen so that the operating point is as shown in the right drawing. The circuit is at rest at point 8. A positive input pulse raises the bias to point 9. At the trailing edge of the input pulse, the bias is forced back to point 8. However, at this point the energy stored in inductor 3 forces the diode voltage down past valley point 7. The diode then switches to point 10, rises to point 11, switches back to point 12, and finally decays back to starting point 8. T...
