Abstract

The arrangement automatically adjusts magnetic reading head gaps in accordance with the thickness of documents which pass under the heads. The documents are fed singly from the hopper past a thickness sensor which supplies electrical signals indicative of document thickness. As the leading edge of the document passes first photocell PC1, the thickness is sensed and a first counter begins counting.

Read Head Gap Control

The arrangement automatically adjusts magnetic reading head gaps in accordance with the thickness of documents which pass under the heads. The documents are fed singly from the hopper past a thickness sensor which supplies electrical signals indicative of document thickness. As the leading edge of the document passes first photocell PC1, the thickness is sensed and a first counter begins counting.

If the thickness of the document changes before its trailing edge passes PC1, the number in the counter, when the thickness changes, is stored. It is compared with a counter which starts as the leading edge of the document passes second photocell PC2. At the time the stored number and the number in the second counter are equal, the document has advanced the correct distance for adjusting the head spacing. This is effected by the head adjust magnets controlled by the output of the comparing unit.
