Serial Adder

In this serial adder, the addend and augend values of a denominational order are alternately fed to a One Digit Adder.

The digits of the addend and the augend are stored in the Main Storage. The first digit of the addend is fed to the Adder where it is added to a carry digit of 0 or 1 stored in the Carry Register.

The result of this addition is a partial sum J which is stored in the Register and a carry which is stored in the Carry Register. The corresponding order digit of the augend is then fed to the Adder and added to J to provide the first digit of the sum S which is stored digit by digit in the Main Storage.

Either of these two additions may produce a carry digit which is stored in the Carry Register. The cycle is repeated for the remaining corresponding order digits of the addend and augend.
