In tape readers, using cartridges for housing the reels, it is necessary to open the bottom of the housing to permit the tape to be withdrawn for reading. An added requirement is that one side of the housing opens to permit removal and replacement of the reels.

The latch holds a cover 10 that forms one side and the bottom of the cartridge 11 closed, but still permits limited opening of the cover under one condition and complete opening under another. Shouldered stud shaft 12 fits into the side wall of 11 and is free to both rotate and move transversely. Spring plate 14 screwed to the wall of 11 acts against the shoulder of stud 12 to hold it as shown.

One end of torsion spring 15 is hooked over anchor pin 16 which is secured in stud 12. The opposite end of 15, under stress, is hooked over hook-shaped lever 17. This has a hub 18 with a cutout 19 which straddles pin 16. Thus, the rotational movement of lever 17 is restricted with respect to stud 12 under influence of the spring. Stop pin 21 is secured in the side wall of 11 in a position to contact pin 16. Thus, the rotation of stud 12 is restricted in a counter clockwise direction, when in the position shown. Latch pin 20 is carried in bracket 22 attached to the cover of 11.
