Abstract

The device displays coordinate information, such as the position of a vehicle. The device comprises a sheet 10 of transparent or translucent material having small deflecting particles in it and defining a screen. A pair of projection units 11 and 12 is mounted for movement along two coordinate edges of the screen 10 by means of lead screws 13 and drive motors 14. Each unit 11 and 12 comprises a light source 15, a slit opening 16 and a collimating lens system 17. Thin, pencil like light beams 18 and 19 are directed through the edges of screen 10 toward the opposite sides of it. The screen is slightly diffusing so that beams 18 and 19 are visible. The intersection of beams 18 and 19 defines the coordinate position determined by the inputs to motors 14.

Device 10 is characterized by its small vertical dimension and lack of overhanging mechanical support apparatus for the indicating means. A transparent or translucent chart, not shown, is positioned over screen 10. Scales 20 and 21 are provided on the sides of the screen 10 opposite the projection units for indicating the coordinates of the light beams.
