Abstract

In the rotating sanding or polishing head, a web of sanding or polishing material is automatically fed from a supply roll across the polishing backup pad to a takeup roll. This occurs as the whole unit rotates. The advancement of the abrasive web is relatively slow in comparison with the rotary motion of the material on the work surface.

Sanding or Polishing Pad

In the rotating sanding or polishing head, a web of sanding or polishing material is automatically fed from a supply roll across the polishing backup pad to a takeup roll. This occurs as the whole unit rotates. The advancement of the abrasive web is relatively slow in comparison with the rotary motion of the material on the work surface.

The device includes stationary bevel gear 1, frame 2 which rotates around the center line of the fixed bevel gear 1, and floating pad 3 carried by 2 and spring biased toward the work surface to be sanded or polished. Pad 3 also revolves around the fixed center. A second bevel gear 4 meshes with gear 1 and is orbited around it by the revolving frame.

Gear 4 drives worm 5 which meshes with worm gear 6 secured to takeup spool 7 supported by frame 2. A web supply spool 8 is also carried by 2 and feeds web 9 of sanding paper across pad 3 to takeup spool 7. The web is urged into rotary contact with the work by means of pad 3.
