Abstract

This method precisely positions a magnetic head on a recording track. Dual element head 1 has a pair of transducers 2 and 3 arranged approximately normal to each other. The two transducers record different tracks of information. Each track includes a space bit for each character, the space bits being arranged in a herringbone pattern.

Magnetic Head Positioning

This method precisely positions a magnetic head on a recording track. Dual element head 1 has a pair of transducers 2 and 3 arranged approximately normal to each other. The two transducers record different tracks of information. Each track includes a space bit for each character, the space bits being arranged in a herringbone pattern.

When head 1 is centered on track 4, the space bits are reproduced simultaneously in both transducers. For an off-track condition the space bits are reproduced in sequence in the transducers. Signals from read amplifiers 5 and 6 are separated in time in a sequence, determined by the direction of displacement of the head from the track. The signals from the amplifiers 5 and 6 are fed to pulse time discriminator 7 to develop a control signal for a head-position servo. This positions head 2 at the point of zero time separation between the signals from the two transducers.
