Simultaneously Sensing

This unit senses information contained in a punched card. The information is subdivided into appropriate groups, of zones in accordance with a multi-hole code and represented by punched holes.

For each of the nine hundred sixty sensing positions there are provided two sensing pins 1. These are arranged column by column and mounted in elastic strips 7 slid into the grooves 8 of the movable plate 9. A system of mutually insulated conductive crossbars is embedded in a plastic plate 10. Such comprises twelve row bars 3 corresponding to the twelve rows of holes. Perpendicular to the bars, there are eighty column bars 4, 5, 6 corresponding to the eighty columns of holes. These are, in accordance with the multi-hole code employed, split into three mutually insulated parts.

In order to sense a card 11, plate 9 is moved upwardly by eccentric 12. All pins 1 encountering a hole 13 with their nipples 2 establish a conductive connection of the respective row bar 3 with the associated column bar 4, 5 or 6. Where a sensing position does not contain a hole, the pin 1 is stopped by card 11 and the strip 7 is deformed, thus preventing the respective nipple 2 from being rendered effective.

The lower drawing shows details of the end view A and of the sectional views B, C, D, E and F, respectively.
