Abstract

The device interrupts and reverses rotational motion of a shaft. Freely rotatable shaft 1 carries radial crank 2. Fork 3 is secured to torsion bar 4 and moves towards shaft 1 under the urging of solenoid 5. When the rotation of shaft 1 is to be interrupted, solenoid 5 is energized to move fork 3 towards 1 until the centerline of the fork is tangent to the crank path.

The device interrupts and reverses rotational motion of a shaft. Freely rotatable shaft 1 carries radial crank 2. Fork 3 is secured to torsion bar 4 and moves towards shaft 1 under the urging of solenoid 5. When the rotation of shaft 1 is to be interrupted, solenoid 5 is energized to move fork 3 towards 1 until the centerline of the fork is tangent to the crank path.

Crank 2 engages fork 3 and twists bar 4 in a counterclockwise direction until the energy of rotation of shaft 1 is absorbed in winding bar 4. The latter is then latched in this position by ratchet tooth 6 which engages rack 7 on bar 4. To reverse the direction of rotation of shaft 1, solenoid 8 is energized to disengage tooth 6 and unlatch bar 3. Bar 4, through fork 3 and the crank 2, accelerates shaft 2 in the reverse direction and restores a portion of the energy stored during deceleration.
