Screw Threaded Speed Change Coupling

This coupling permits axial displacement of a rotatable driven member, initially a limited degree at a slow rate and then at a faster rate.

The coupling comprises sleeve 1 having internal and external screw threads. The internal threads are of fine pitch and engage spindle 2. The external threads are of coarse pitch and engage the fixed body 3. The helix angle of the fine pitch threads is less than that of the coarse pitch threads. Spindle 2 has stop surfaces 3 and 5. These are spaced apart axially a predetermined distance greater than the axial length of the internally threaded part of the sleeve 1. Surface 4 is a flange formed integrally with one end of spindle 2. Surface 5 is a pin that projects transversely through the spindle axis.

If spindle 2 is rotated one way, it moves upwardly relative to sleeve 1 and body 3 at the relatively slow rate controlled by the fine threads until surface 5 abuts the sleeve. As the spindle continues to rotate, the sleeve and spindle are elevated in unison at a faster rate controlled by the coarse threads. Conversely, if spindle 2 is rotated the opposite way, it is lowered at the slow rate controlled by the fine pitch threads until surface 4 abuts the sleeve. Then, spindle 2 and sleeve 1 are lowered in unison at a faster rate controlled by the coarse threads.
