Typewriter Paper Feed Mechanism

This typewriter mechanism operates automatically to drive the platen in a paper feeding direction, when the carriage is moved to the right from one margin stop to another.

Keel 27 is mounted on sleeve 21 and normally rotates freely relative to platen
1. Wrapped about reel 27 is a tape 50, which is connected at its outer end to a stationary point on the typewriter. A spring within reel 27 tends to rotate it in a direction to wind up tape 50. A clutch element is connected to shaft 9 which is movable longitudinally through platen 1 and reel 27.

As the carriage moves into engagement with a right hand margin 80, member 70 engages shoulder 72 and is moved to the right to increase the tension of spring 69. At the same time, lever 54 is released for movement to the right through action of spring 69. This movement of lever 54 drives sleeve 58 against pin 57 on shaft 9 for moving the latter to the right. This engages the clutch element with the reel so it drives the platen in a paper feeding direction. This occurs when the carriage moves to the right and causes the tape to rotate the reel against the action of its spring.
