Data Translator

The translator converts data from a multi column punched record into records on a magnetic tape, allowing high speed readout to a highspeed utilization device, e.g., a computer.

The punched record is stationarily positioned with the rows parallel to the plane of the drawing and the columns, which may be punched according to a combination code, are perpendicular to it. Light passes through record perforations, a matrix of apertures, a matrix of mainly cylindrical light conductors, a column of perforations in the magnetic type, a column of separate triangular light conductors to a column of photocells. As the single column of apertures in the tape scans the matrix of light conductors, light passed through sequential columns of record perforations goes to the photocells. A column of write heads associated with the photocells records the data on the typewriter as a replica of those on the record.

The tape is in coupled relation with a typewriter carriage. During carriage return the tape is,moved in the reverse direction and high speed column by column readout of the information on the tape is accomplished by read heads. If these heads are slightly staggered, as shown, the columnar information is serial. An erase head erases the information.

Information supplied by the photocells can, in addition, be printed out via a decoder and an actuators a typewriter. The typewriter can also be used to enter information through the write heads.
