Low Pressure Air Bearing Slider

This device torsionally loads an air lubricated slider towards a moving surface.

Slider 1 is pivotally mounted in T shaped arm 2 by pins 3 received in openings in the extremities 3 of the arm. Slider 1 is initially loaded towards the moving surface 5 by a small force. A torsion force is then applied to the arm in the direction of reducing the angle of attack of the slider.

As the angle of attack is reduced, a partial vacuum is created under the trailing edge of the slider. An equilibrium condition develops between the torsional force, and the vacuum, which maintains nearly, constant air film thickness for both positive and negative normal loads.
