Speech Wave Indicator

In a portable dictating machine meter 1 selectively serves the dual purpose of indicating battery level in Listen position and voice modulations while in Record position.

During Listen, switch 2 is depressed to connect the output of amplifier 3 directly to speaker 4. Battery 5, however, biases transistor 6 into saturation by the connection of its negative terminal through resistor 7 to base 8. Thus, the battery 5 is substantially directly across the meter 1 and the battery needle is deflected according to battery level.

During Record, the switch 2 is in the position shown and the voice modulations as well as being applied to a recording head are also applied to base 8. Thus, the positive audio potential swings cause reduced conduction of transistor 6. This reduces the potential across meter 1 and its needle responds. The needle fluctuates during dictation.
