Abstract

The apparatus has a plurality of magnetic recording disc 1...4 rotatably mounted on shaft S one above the other. The top and bottom sides of each disc have magnetic recording surfaces. Also, rotatably mounted on the shaft between discs 1...4 are transducer carriers a, b and c on the arms of which are read-write heads. Each transducer carrier is provided with two sets of read-write heads. These serve the recording surfaces on the bottom side of the upper disc and the top side of the lower disc, respectively.

The apparatus has a plurality of magnetic recording disc 1...4 rotatably mounted on shaft S one above the other. The top and bottom sides of each disc have magnetic recording surfaces. Also, rotatably mounted on the shaft between discs 1...4 are transducer carriers a, b and c on the arms of which are read-write heads. Each transducer carrier is provided with two sets of read-write heads. These serve the recording surfaces on the bottom side of the upper disc and the top side of the lower disc, respectively.

Drive mechanisms (not shown) rotate the discs at a selected speed and in a given direction and rotate the transducer carriers at the same speed, but in the opposite direction to that of the discs. The speed of a disc relative to a read-write head is twice the absolute speed of either rotating member. Thus, information is either recorded or read from the recording discs at a speed twice that of any rotating member.
