Abstract

A multi-sided scanning mirror 1 and copy drum 2 in the photocopy device (left drawing) are inherently synchronized since they are rotated from a common drive 3. Any two-sided or opaque original document 4 can be copied. Images in the photosensitive copy 5 have the same contrast as the original, since all scanning is done in the visible light region. The rotating action of mirror 1 scans a focussed spot from visible light source 6 across original 4. The spot is reflected back to mirror 1 by an amount proportional to the tonal characteristics of original 4.

A visible light photoreceptor 7 receives the reflected light and produces an electrical signal on line 8 to an amplifier 9 which is proportional to the light reflectance. This signal is applied to an electro-optical crystal modulator 10 for modulating the output of an ultra violet source 11. The original document 4 and ultra violet source 11 are also moved together in the vertical direction while horizontal scanning proceeds.

In another version (right drawings), ultra violet source 11a is also spot focussed toward mirror 1a for reflex scanning of both original and copy. Source 11a is directly modulated by amplifier 9a.
