Air-Flow Distribution Plenums

Connected in series with a large plenum 1 (A) is a plurality of parallel arranged small plenums 2. These plenums operate to so divide and subdivide the air flow that substantially equal volumes of air are delivered to the respective outlets 3 of small plenums 2.

Plenum 1 has a large end 4 connected to a source of pressurized air, such as centrifugal fan 5. Between end 4 and a smaller closed end 6, plenum 1 has a tapered wall 7 opposite which is a non-tapered wall 8. Two baffles 9 (B) divide the interior of plenum 1 into three equal parts. Each receives a like volume of air as the air flows toward end 6.

Rectangular ducts 10, providing openings of equal size, are uniformly spaced along wall 8. A separate flexible coupling 11 connects each duct 10 with the large end of a respective plenum 2.

Each plenum 2 tapers from its large end toward its enclosed small end. Between these ends, each plenum 2 has a tapered wall 12 opposite which is an opening which is divided into a plurality of outlets 3 by flat partitions, such as 13.

With this arrangement, in plenum 1, baffles 9 suppress undesirable turbulence. The slope or taper of wall 7 and the curvature at 14 are calculated to modify the dynamics of the air flow to provide substantially equal flow distribution into each duct 10.
