Abstract

Intermittent high speed removal of tape from the center of a reel causes rotation of the turntable holding the reel. This occurs at a speed such that a large amount of tape may be spilled from the reel when tape withdrawal is stopped. In the turntable shown, a tape tension controlled stop arrests the turntable when tape withdrawal is stopped.

Tension Controlled Turntable for Center Roll Feed

Intermittent high speed removal of tape from the center of a reel causes rotation of the turntable holding the reel. This occurs at a speed such that a large amount of tape may be spilled from the reel when tape withdrawal is stopped. In the turntable shown, a tape tension controlled stop arrests the turntable when tape withdrawal is stopped.

Turntable 1 holds a reel of tape and is secured to spider 2 freely rotatable on stationary spindle 3. Fixed to the upper end of 3 is plate 4 having an outer circle of rolls 5 to guide the inner tape turns and an inclined roll 6 to change the tape feeding direction. Another roll 7 is rotatable on stud 8 passing through a hole in plate 4. Roll 7 is held by an arm 9 pivoted on the bottom of plate 4 and tensioned counterclockwise by spring 10.

So long as the withdrawing tape has sufficient tension, arm 9 is held in the position shown in the small left view with its left end inside the path of one or more stop plates 11 fixed to the spider 2. As soon as withdrawal of tape stops or when the turntable with the tape reel starts feeding tape too rapidly to roll 6, the tension in the tape drops and spring 10 pulls the end of arm 9 into the path of stop plate 11 (small right view) to arrest rotation of the turntable and prevent further tape feed to roll 6 until additional tape is to be withdrawn from the reel.
