Abstract

A standard automatic screw driver 1 is powered by air delivered through a supply tube 2. Screws 3 are fed out of a vibratory hopper (not shown) onto a track 4 where they are held back by a spring 5. Releasing a hand lever 6 on the screw driver closes an air valve 7 and at the same time closes an electrical circuit through a microswitch to energize a solenoid 8 o n the hopper. A wedge 9 operated by the solenoid pushes one screw from the track 4 into a feed tube 10 where it is carried by a blast of air from a source (not shown) to a split screw holder 11 at the bottom of the portable screw driver unit.

A wedge 9 operated by the solenoid pushes one screw from the track 4 into a feed tube 10 where it is carried by a blast of air from a source (not shown) to a split screw holder 11 at the bottom of the portable screw driver unit. A detect and eject station between the wedge 9 and feed tube 10 includes a split contact ring 12 to detect screws with oversize heads or burrs on the side of the head and actuate a reverse blast of air (not shown) to eject the oversized screws through an eject tube 13.

Upon depressing the hand lever 6, the air valve 7 is opened to rotate the bit 14 of the screw driver and to also actuate an air cylinder 15 to lift a pull-rod 16 attached at its lower end to the holder 11. The power lift of the chucked screw to the driver bit 14 is made as the screw driver unit is moved to insert the screw in the assembly. Driving the screw through the holder 11 into its location takes only one motion.
