This device is for indicating or controlling variations in the speed of one revolving shaft as referenced to the speed of another.

The two ball thrust bearings 10 and 11 and two friction wheels 12 and 14 form a double differential system. An adjustable spring 15 holds the elements of the bearings and the friction wheels in contact with one another. This causes the bearings to act as both planetary transmissions and friction clutches. The outer races 16 and 17 are driven through friction exerted by plate 19 fixed to the shaft and acting on race 16 and spring 15 acting on race 17. Assuming 18 to be rotating continuously in one direction and 22 to be rotating in the same direction, inner race 20 is driven in the same direction as 18 with race 21 rotating in the opposite direction. Should 22 be reversed, race 21 and shaft 18 rotate in the same direction. For purposes of control or indication, only the bearing which has its inner and outer races revolving in opposite directions is used during rotation of the control shaft in one direction. The other bearing is used during rotation of the control shaft in the opposite direction.

Fixed to the ball cage 23 of each bearing but insulated from it electrically is a contact 24. Rotation of the ball cage causes 24 to make contact with one or the other of the two fixed contacts 25.
