Card Feed Mechanism

The mechanism permits a card to be read once and fed directly into a hopper, recirculated and reread any desired number of times, or side tracked and stored indefinitely for later rereading or processing while other cards are read and processed ahead of it.

A picker 1 feeds cards successively from a hopper 2 into feed rolls 3. These rolls advance the card past, for example, a read station 4 and onto a drum 5. Drum 5 carries the card through a short arc past a read and write head 6. If a stacking control magnet 7 is energized, a deflector 8 diverts the card off the drum for feeding toward a stacker 9. If magnet 7 is de-energized, deflector 8 is retracted and the card passes part way around the drum to a deflector 10.

If a store control magnet 11 is de-energized, deflector 10 is retracted so the card is carried around by the drum past head 6 repeatedly until magnet 7 is energized. However, if magnet 11 is energized, deflector 10 diverts the card off the drum 5 onto a storage track 12 and into the bite of a driven roll 13 and a retractable idler roll 14. As long as magnet 15 is de-energized, roll 14 is retracted and a stop edge 16 is raised to prevent feeding of the card. When magnet 15 is energized, edge 16 is lowered and roll 14 is moved toward roll 13 to effectively pinch and drive the card onto the drum 5 for feeding past head 6.
