Esaki Diode Multimode Oscillator

The Esaki diode E, in combination with several tank circuits, provides a multimode sinusoidal oscillator.

The circuit oscillates at a frequency where the impedance appears purely resistive, provided the resistive components of the tank circuits are greater than the minimum negative resistance of the Esaki diode. The frequency of oscillation of the circuit is changed by any one of three modes: (1) injecting a voltage at the resonant frequency across E from an external source, (2) decreasing the impedances of the tank circuits which resonate at frequencies not desired until each is less than the minimum negative resistance of the diode E by closure of a switch S1 and (3) modifying the impedance characteristic of the tank circuits so the impedance is real only at the resonant frequency desired. This is accomplished by opening of a switch S2 when necessary. As soon as the desired oscillations are obtained by employing any one of the different modes, the controlling factor utilized is removed.
