Multiple Document Feed Detection

The arrangement detects multiple or overlapping document feeding. Each document 3 is inscribed at some time before its actual use with a number or coded mark 5. This mark is shown as an Arabic numeral 3 indicative of the actual thickness of the document.

As the document is fed through a document processing machine, the marked thickness is compared with the measured thickness. If there is disagreement, an output circuit is energized to stop the machine, reject the document or take other appropriate action. The comparison is made by using an air blast from nozzle 7 to bias a measuring wheel 9 against the document. Displacement of the wheel changes the output of a differential transformer 11.

The output is compared in a comparing means 13 with the output of character reading means 15 which reads the indicated thickness. An unequal output energizes output leads to control reject or stopping circuits.
