Abstract

Head 1 is fastened to a head mounting plate 2 that is connected through a spring 16 to the end of a pivotable mounting post 6. The lower end of post 6 is slidably passed through a hole (not shown) in a cross member 7. The latter is pivotably mounted in a bracket 15 that is fastened to the frame of a tape transport (not shown).

Head Retraction Mechanism

In the lower figure, the head retraction mechanism supports a read write magnetic tape head 1. Head 1 is fastened to a head mounting plate 2 that is connected through a spring 16 to the end of a pivotable mounting post 6. The lower end of post 6 is slidably passed through a hole (not shown) in a cross member 7. The latter is pivotably mounted in a bracket 15 that is fastened to the frame of a tape transport (not shown).

A head locating bracket 11 is fastened also to the frame of the tape transport by means of adjusting screws 13, three in number. A head retracting plate 12 is fastened to the upper side of bracket 11 and extends backwardly with a V-shape. Plate 12 supports three steel balls 4a, 4b and 4c which are symmetrically located in openings in plate 12. The steel balls 4 are mounted in plate 12 by means of appropriate locating brackets 16.

The under side of plate 2 has three grooves 3a, 3b and 3c (upper figure). The grooves respectively engage the steel balls when plate 2 is positioned over plate 12 and pressure is applied between them. When positioned, the final location of head 1 is adjusted by screws 13.

Cam followers 8 are fixed crosswise to post 6. Followers 8 engage respective head retraction cams 9 comprising two plates fixed to bracket 15. The cams comprise respective grooves in plates 13 so that before post 6 can be pivoted substantially to the left, it is provided with an upward motion. This allows grooves 3a, 3b and 3c t...
